Kirk Ferentz said Friday night on a national radio show that Brandon Wegher remains absent from training camp, but the Iowa football coach expects the sophomore running back to be in school when classes start next week.

Wegher has been in and out of training camp while dealing with personal issues. His status with the team remains unclear.

“He came back and practiced a couple days, and his heart wasn’t into it,” Ferentz said on Fox Sports Radio’s Petros & Money Show. “We’ve visited a couple times since. He is going to be in school, at least his intentions are to be in school this Monday and start classes. I’ve just encouraged him to first of all do that, get back in class and stay in good standing academically and continue to pursue his degree and take whatever time he needs to work through whatever it is he’s working through.

“We have nothing but strong feelings about Brandon; he’s a very valued team member, and we’re certainly hopeful he’ll choose, at some point, to rejoin the team and get back to football. But that being said, too, I’m totally respectful of his intentions and desires, and I think he just needs a little time right now, a little space to sort a few things out.”

Wegher started training camp as the No. 2 running back on Iowa’s depth chart after rushing for 641 yards and setting a school freshman record with eight touchdowns last season. He figured to be in the battle for playing time in the backfield with sophomores Adam Robinson and Jewel Hampton.

Wegher was absent from training camp for more than a week after leaving the team Aug. 8. Ferentz said after Iowa’s scrimmaged Aug. 14 at Kinnick Stadium that he was hopeful Wegher would return to the team.

“I respect his feelings right now,” Ferentz said. “We’re hopeful and cautiously optimistic he’ll be back. I just can’t imagine him not wanting to come back. But that’s entirely in his court right now.”
