The Lions used a third-round pick on Amari Spievey in April. They pictured him as a cornerback, the position Spievey excelled at during his sophomore and junior seasons at Iowa. But now Detroit is dabbling with Spievey at safety, and the experiment got off to a good start Saturday in the Lions’ exhibition win against the Browns, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press.

Spievey registered six solo tackles. Iowa fans will appreciate that one of those tackles was a sack of former Iowa State QB Seneca Wallace. Tom Kowalski writes that Spievey made some mistakes, but Lions coach Jim Schwartz thinks they are errors that will be corrected with experience.

The Lions placed DT Jared DeVries on injured reserve Friday after he underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair loose cartilage. DeVries has gone through some tough times in 12 years with the Lions and he’s disappointed he likely won’t be part of a turnaround in Detroit, writes Dave Birkett.

The Bills cut rookie OL Kyle Calloway on Monday. Calloway, a three-year starter for the Hawkeyes, was Buffalo’s seventh-round draft choice in April.

The Ravens placed FS Marcus Paschal on IR Monday.

TE Tony Moeaki broke into the stat category with the Chiefs. The rookie registered a tackle after an interception against the Eagles.

Seahawks DT Colin Cole recovered a Brett Farve fumble Saturday night against the Vikings. In the same game, Viking RB Albert Young carried five times for 12 yards and caught a pass for a four-yard gain and LB Chad Greenway had two tackles for Minnesota.

Jets RB Shonn Greene ran 12 times for 56 yards in a 16-11 loss to the Redskins. DT Matt Kroul had a pair of tackles for the Jets.

P Jason Baker and FS Charles Godfrey have had impressive preseason performances for the Carolina Panthers, writes Darin Gantt of the Charlotte Observer. Baker drilled a 76-yard punt Saturday in Carolina’s victory against Tennessee.

RB Ladell Betts made his first appearance with the Saints Friday, carrying twice for 15 yards and catching one pass for three yards. Betts also watched rookie Chris Ivory carry 11 times for 45 yards and turn a screen into a 76-yard touchdown. Betts and Ivory could competing for the No. 3 running back job in New Orleans, but James Varney of the New Orleans Times Picayune speculates the Saints will carry four running backs on their roster.

Green Bay’s starting offensive line won’t have Bryan Bulaga in it. Bulaga thinks the time he missed with a hip flexor injury crippled his chances, according to Michael David Smith.

Colts LB Pat Angerer is leading the NFL in preseason tackles with 24. Angerer played extensively on Thursday against the Packers after starter Gary Brackett left the game with a hand injury, but X-rays were negative.
