Josh Koeppel hit by truck this morning
University of Iowa football player Josh Koeppel (stats – football card – photos) is doing fine after being hit by a truck in Iowa City Monday morning.
Iowa City Police Sgt. Denise Brotherton said Koeppel was westbound on Burlington Street, crossing the intersection with Gilbert Street, at 7:25 a.m. today. Koeppel was driving a small Yamaha motorcycle.
At the same time, a Ford F150 pickup was eastbound on Burlington. A police officer who witnessed the crash said the driver of the truck attempted to make a left-hand turn onto Gilbert Street and collided with Koeppel in the intersection. The driver was cited for failing to yield.
Koeppel was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics were he was treated for non-life-threatening injuries. Brotherton said Koeppel appears as if he’s going to be fine.
Koeppel is a 6-foot-2-inch, 273-pound offensive lineman who walked on to the Hawkeye football team after graduating from Iowa City High School in 2006. Throughout preseason camp, Koeppel has been competing with James Ferentz for the starting job at center. He played in four games in 2009 and was named academic all Big Ten.

How many motorcycle riding Hawkeye athletes will now get a mandate from the AD requiring that they wear a helmet?
This would not have happended in Columbus, Ann Arbor, or all the SEC. Football players actually going to class, especially a class starting as early as 7:25AM!

I was there when it happened and it a tough intersection because of the sun at that time of the morning. He wasn’t wearing a helmet or glasses. He got up for a moment then laid down, after it sunk in what happened. I know the guy who hit him and the truck has a good dent in it too.

What was left out of Ferentz’s earlier comments about the competition at Center with his son. “It will be a fair competition. If Koeppel plays better than James, he’ll start…..(and under his breath) then I’ll pay a guy to hit him with a truck.”

[...] Take note that Josh Koeppel is not wearing a helmet while riding the moped, and although he truly did have a good stroke of luck here in this accident, I would suggest to him, as I am sure his coach is doing right now, that he wear one while riding the moped in the future. [...]
