Koeppel is expected to practice this week

Josh Koeppel, a center for the Iowa Hawkeye football team, appeared on NBC’s Today show.

The senior from Iowa City talked via satellite with host Matt Lauer, about being hit by a truck last week while riding a motor bike.

Video of the accident has gained national attention.

LAUER: I have to tell you, we get to see a lot of video around here…rarely do I gasp out loud when I see some footage. I did with this one. How are you?

KOEPPEL: I am great. I’m feeling fine, just few scratches and a bruise. But that’s about it.

LAUER: You went flying through the air. This was a head on collision with a pickup truck. You remember everything about it?

KOEPPEL: I do. As I was getting in the intersection, I saw the truck last minute and I couldn’t even hit the breaks. It felt like I was flying through the air and then next thing I knew, I rolled over and I saw my phone, grabbed it and stood up. My first reaction was just to get to the sidewalk. So I started heading there.

LAUER: When you saw the video tape, did ti shock you?

KOEPPEL: Yeah, a little bit. I mean, it’s crazy video. My dad and I went and watched it the next day at the police station. The officers were pretty shocked by the video, also.

LAUER: I hear your dad and you did something else together. You went and actually talked to the driver of the truck who was pretty shaken up. He thought he really hurt you, and you just went to see him and tell him you’re ok, right?

KOEPPEL: Yeah, I just wanted to let him know I was fine. You know, it was an accident. Accidents happen. I didn’t want him losing any more sleep over it. I just wanted to let him know I was fine.

LAUER: You weren’t wearing a helmet. You have a football helmet with you, now. You promise to wear one in the future?

KOEPPEL: Oh, yeah.

Koeppel ended the segment by putting on a Hawkeye football helmet.
