Iowa football: Hampton out for season

[ 17 ] September 21, 2010 |

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz confirmed on the Big Ten teleconference that sophomore running back Jewel Hampton has been lost for the season.

Senior linebacker Bruce Davis will also miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury, as well.

“It’s one of the tough parts about the game. Both encountered knee injuries that require surgery,” Ferentz said. “Both will be out for the season.”

Hampton — who missed the entire 2009 season with an ACL injury — limped off the field in the third quarter in Tucson, Ariz., and did not return. He had 114 yards on 27 carries this season, and caught a touchdown pass against Arizona.

Ferentz said he didn’t expect that senior running back Paki O’Meara would be available this week, leaving the running back depth chart as sophomore Adam Robinson and a ton of question marks.

“Right now we’ve got Adam, and anyone else that wants to volunteer,” Ferentz said. “It puts us a little bit thin back there.”

Sophomore Jason White, a converted defensive back, had an MCL injury earlier this season.

A pair of true freshman — Marcus Coker (6-foot, 230) and De’Andre Johnson (5-8, 210) — may be enlisted. Neither played in the first three games. Coker is recovering from a shoulder injury he suffered in camp. Johnson has recovered from an ACL injury he suffered his senior season at Monsignor Pace in Miami.

Give Morris a chance to run the ball. Ball St. is a good opportunity to give him a try.

Bitter much? There are some things more important than college football. Give him some room and time to sort out his personal life and hopefully he returns to the team next season.

This just stinks. Jewel, I feel for you. You are running through a stretch of bad luck but you will persevere, we believe in you and want to see you on the field next year. Here’s to a speedy recovery.

Yes, it hurts the team, but it’s a bigger loss for Jewel. Here is a kid who might have been on his way to a pro career; I thought he showed that potential as a healthy freshman who could hit those holes so fast.

To have to go through another year of doubt, and possibly even the end of his promising career in a sport he has surely loved all of his young life has to be awful for him. I hope he can come back and play again, not so much for the team’s sake, but his. Anyone who has had a severe injury in sports knows how hard it is to work to rehab it.

Hang in there Jewel. There are a lot of fans out here rooting for you.

the offense was good enough to win at arizona, the special teams gave arizona 15 pts

with hampton out and wegner in another world, we need ronnie harmon

stanzi will have to sharpen his game and not throw touchdowns to the other team

Nobody gave Arizona anything. Iowa’s offense or offensive line did not play well…that is why Iowa could not run the ball and Stantzi was sacked more than 4 times.
Lets not forget that Arizona won the game and on that particular day they were a better team
Stop looking for excuses and turn the page.

What is so sad about this is that Wegher got a big head & was thinking of himself & not the team. Last year he got his chance because Jewel got hurt. If Wegher would have just waited for his time, everything would have worked out & he would have been the #2 back right now. I feel terrible for Jewel, and maybe he can get a medical redshirt & come back next year. Either way Jewel will be back next year. Let what Wegher did be a lesson to younger kids with high aspirations, good thing will come to those who wait. If Wegher would have just waited it out his time would come. Good Luck to Coker & Johnson, the Iowa community will be behind you when you get in the game. To our workhorse, Robinson, keep up the good work. Go Hawks!
