Great win but Norm and his soft coverage defense need to evolve with the times if the Hawks are going to be competitive in the future. Also, I hope A-Rob watched the game and saw what a real Big Ten running back looks like. Hopefully, next year’s team won’t be a bunch of out of shape, underachievers like this group. Does anyone really think that Clayborn was really an All American this season ? Or was it just an award given on reputation ?

It’s a cover 2 zone which is a defense designed to give up yards but not scores. It relies heavily on open field tackling and LBs that can pass cover. Right now our LBs are young, very young so they’re not quite there yet. I don’t think the scheme needs to change but there does need to me more blitzing, espicially against a QB like Gabbert. Not getting extra pressure on the QB is why our DL is getting gassed by the 4th qtr.

The Chicago Bears run the exact same D but every 10 plays or so the send an extra guy after the QB. We also don’t have a great rush end. AC is good but when it comes to pass rushing, he’s not Matt Roth.

Sorry, I missed your All-America question. Yes, AC deserves the honor. Any DL that commands double and triple teams all season is worthy of All-America status.

Great breakdown BoM. I would also like to add that the scheme is designed to force a QB to grow impatient and make mistakes. By the end of the game, the scheme worked by forcing a late int.

Also, Iowa blitzed on two of Missouri’s touchdown plays in the red zone.

Good points! Spievey’s coverage on those short passes is tighter than Prater’s and Hyde’s. Spievey is a quicker athlete and can also cover the Deep Ball. When Iowa has the right personnel, the defense can get off the field quicker. Plus the quarterbacks that Iowa faced this season, were really good. In all my years watching Hawkeye football, I’ve never seen the D face a more talented group of quarterbacks.

Football truly is a game of inches! If Wisky QB Tolzien misfires on that 4th and 4 pass, Iowa wins. If the Wisconsin defender didn’t stop the ASU returner at the 1 yard line, Arizona State might have won. If Cal made just one more play, they could’ve beaten Oregon. LSU would’ve lost to Florida if the ball had not bounced their way on that fake field goal. Auburn could’ve lost to Bama if the defensive player missed the ball on the Ingram fumble.

I love AC and was glad he came back this year, but the consensus has to be that he simply didn’t have the season he had last year. Although he saw a lot of double-teams in the first half of the season, if you paid attention you saw that he was double-teamed MUCH less in the Big 10 as teams increasingly saw it wasn’t necessary. That being said AC still is a great Hawk and should have a good NFL career – class guy and good luck to him.
