'Doesn't look good for Payne,' McCaffery says
Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery, who has not closed the door on a possible return to the court by sophomore point guard Cully Payne this season, made it sound unlikely Monday.
“It doesn't look good for
him this year,'' McCaffery said on his weekly radio show.
Payne had surgery to repair a sports hernia on Nov. 30. Surgeons also found, and repaired, a torn oblique muscle.
McCaffery said it could be a month, or two months, before Payne could return.
“If it's two months, the season is about over,'' McCaffery said.
Since he played in just five games this season, Payne would qualify for a medical redshirt season. He was averaging 3.8 points and started the season's first five games.
Payne started all 32 games last season as a freshman, averaging 8.7 points and collecting 122 assists.
