Nesbitt and bobbleheads back

[ 0 ] January 6, 2011 |

Iowa sophomore point guard Trisha Nesbitt played four minutes on Wednesday at Minnesota, effectively forfeiting a redshirt this season.

She was 0-for-1 with a turnover, but Iowa coach Lisa Bluder was glad to have her back on the court.

“We do believe that she can help us,” Bluder said. “It’s going to be a gradual recovery; she’s probably not going to be at the peak of her game right away.”

Nesbitt had not played in the first 15 games for Iowa with torn tendon in her foot. She played in all 34 games as a freshman and was a key reserve.

Bluder said the decision was made by the coaches and by Nesbitt.

“We really based it on Trisha’s desire and her ability to help our team, which we think she can help our team this year,” Bluder said.

HANSEN BREAKS OUT: Iowa junior Kalli Hansen had her best game as a Hawkeye on Wednesday, scoring seven points and grabbing a career-high eight rebounds in 19 minutes of action.

“It’s fun for me to see Kalli just coming of her own and getting that confidence of playing this level of basketball,” Bluder said. “I think she’s really enjoying it.”

Hansen, an Olin native, was signed by the Hawkeyes after two years at Kirkwood Community College.

“When I didn’t have it right out of high school it was hard,” Hansen said of an Iowa offer. “I knew if I worked hard at junior college, I would get that chance again.”

Hansen had back problems in November and averaged 4.6 minutes on the court in her first eight games. She has played 13.5 minutes per game the last four.

BOBBLE TIME: Kachine Alexander will become the first Iowa player featured on a bobblehead Saturday when 1,500 of them are given out at the Ohio State game.

Previously fans have snatched up bobbleheads of Bluder and men’s coach Fran McCaffery this winter.

“I didn’t think too much of it,” Alexander said. “But my friend came to visit me the other day, ‘Oh my gosh, you have a bobblehead?’ I was like, ‘So?’ She’s like, ‘How many people every get to have a bobblehead in their life?’

“I was, ‘Ok, you’re right, you’re right.’”
