Brown:McCaffery takes Basabe over Fuller
Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery has been asked a lot of questions about freshman forward Melsahn Basabe this season.
Monday was no different on McCaffery’s weekly radio show. Asked about Basabe, McCaffery made this comparison between Basabe and another forward, Aaron Fuller, who transfered out of the Hawkeye program after last season.
“He’s (Basabe) a better player than Fuller,” McCaffery.
Fuller, who transfered to Southern California and is sitting out the season in accordance with NCAA rules, averaged 9.7 points and 6.2 rebounds as a sophomore starter last season. Fuller led the team in scoring, at 12.3 points, and rebounding, 6.2, in Big Ten play.
Basabe, who has started every game as a freshman, is Iowa’s third-leading scorer at 10.5 points a game and leads the team with 7.0 rebounds a game. In Big Ten play, Basabe is the second-leading scorer at 12.4 points a game and No. 1 in rebounding at 7.5.
Iowa returns to action Thursday in an 8 p.m. game at Northwestern. The Wildcats have lost five of six games and are coming off a 65-41 loss at Penn State Sunday. The Wildcats made just two of 21 3-point attempts. Northwestern made 14 of 28 3-point attempts in a 90-71 win at Iowa earlier this season.
