Johnson-Koulianos says he’s remorseful

[ 13 ] February 16, 2011 |

Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, Iowa’s career receiving leader, apologized for bringing negative attention to the football team after his December drug arrest.

During an interview with Cedar Rapids’ KGAN-TV, Johnson-Koulianos said he has not spoken with Hawkeye coach Kirk Ferentz, but if given that opportunity, he would show remorse.

“I would tell coach, first and foremost, I’m deeply sorry for what I did to the university in December, the negative attention,” Johnson-Koulianos said in the interview. “And, after finishing a conversation about those issues, I would go back and explain to him, for so long, I wanted to be the player, in the locker room and on the field, that he wanted me to be.

“I bought into the program at some point in my second or third year.  I just fell in love with the place.  If I could go back, I’d do it all the same way.

“The one thing I would change is my relationship with coach.”

Johnson-Koulianos  is preparing for the NFL draft at a training facility in Chicago. He said he is not allowed to use Hawkeye training facilities.

“I have not had any interaction or communication with (Ferentz) thus far,” Johnson-Koulianos said. “Towards the end of our season and throughout my career, it was kind of a rocky road for us. And I think (the December legal issue) was the final straw for him.”

Because of that, he doubts the program will ever ask him back during special occasions.

“I think I forfeited that opportunity when I got in that legal trouble in December,” Johnson-Koulianos said. “And again, I get it, I understand it.”

Iowa media relations officials said Ferentz had no comment on the interview.
