Big Ten honors Hawks
Senior guard Kachine Alexander was named first-team all-conference for the second straight season for the Hawkeyes on Monday.
Alexander was chosen for the first team by both the coaches and the media.
“And it’s her birthday today,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said on her Learfield Sports radio show Monday. “What a 22nd birthday.”
She also earned a spot on the all-defensive team. Alexander is the top rebounding guard in Big Ten history and just one of five players in league history to compile 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 300 assists.
This season Alexander averaged 14.6 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.
Sophomore guard Jaime Printy was picked second team by the coaches, and third team by the media. Junior guard Kamille Wahlin was tabbed honorable mention by both.
Printy, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year last season, led the Hawkeyes with 16.4 points per game and is third in the Big Ten with 2.2 3-pointers per game.
The Marion native also was named Big Ten Player of the Week on Monday after scoring a career-high 32 against Illinois and 28 points at Indiana in a pair of games last week.
Wahlin averaged 12.3 points and 3.7 assists per game for the Hawkeyes.
“There were players that were honorable mention that in other years would be first, second or third team,” Bluder said.
No. 24 Iowa is 22-7 and tied for third place in the Big Ten at 10-6. The Hawkeyes, on a five-game winning streak, open the Big Ten Tournament play at 7:30 p.m. Friday against Ohio State.
Big Ten Player of the Year was split between Jantel Lavender of Ohio State (media) and Kalisha Keane of Michigan State (coaches).
Suzy Merchant of Michigan State was Coach of the Year and Maggie Lucas of Penn State was Freshman of the Year by both the coaches and media.
