Guerrero to visit Iowa on Friday

[ 1 ] February 28, 2011 |

High school point guard Cezar Guerrero will visit the University of Iowa this weekend, his AAU coach said.

“He’ll be out there Friday night, and he’ll probably go back Sunday night,” said Dinos Trigonis, who in addition to being Guerrero’s AAU coach in southern California also coached current Iowa point guard Bryce Cartwright on the AAU circuit.

Iowa coach Fran McCaffery woud like to sign two players this spring and the 5-foot-11 Guerrero is high on his list.

“He knows it’s a rebuilding situation (at Iowa),” Trigonis said. “But he’s very impressed with how Fran has gotten the team to be competitive, even though they’re last in the Big Ten. But in most of their games, they’ve taken the top teams down to the wire.”

Guerrero, who is a senior at St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower, Calif., took an official visit to Oklahoma State last weekend. He also has visited Oklahoma and Western Kentucky, where he once was committed.

Trigonis said Guerrero might take his fifth visit to Kansas, Marquette or New Mexico State, but nothing has been scheduled at this point.

Asked if distance from home would be a factor in Guerrero’s decision, Trigonis said, “That might be a secondary factor, but it’s not a primary factor.”

Guerrero is aware of McCaffery’s background as a former college point guard, and Trigonis said Guerrero likes how McCaffery utilizes the position.

Guerrero also knows Iowa assistant coach Sherman Dillard dating back to when Dillard worked as a Nike representative.

The fact that Cartwright’s younger brother attends the same high school as Guerrero is another positive for Iowa, Trigonis said.

“It doesn’t hurt to have that familiarity,” Trigonis said. “He knows about Bryce.”

Trigonis compared Guerrero’s playing style to that of high-scoring Brigham Young guard Jimmer Fredette.

“Cezar is a scoring point guard that also can find guys and create for himself and for others,” Trigonis said. “He’s kind of like Jimmer Fredette in that he’s just a fearless scorer who can carry a team.”

Rivals.com ranks Guerrero as the No. 61 prospect in the 2011 senior class. He ended his high school career last week by scoring 30 points in a four-point playoff loss.

McCaffery was on hand to watch Guerrero’s last game, along with assistant coaches from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
