Hawkeye recruit Logic collecting honors
The problem with being one of the best high school players in the country is that sometimes the honors and awards start piling up on you.
Samantha Logic, the No. 10 girls basketball player in the country per ESPN’s HoopGurlz.com, was named the Wisconsin’s Miss Basketball on Saturday night in Madison.
She had to delay her trip to Chicago where she is preparing to play in the McDonald’s All-American game Wednesday in the United Center.
“Everything she’s gotten is well-deserved and well-earned,” said Willie Maryland, Logic’s high school coach at Racine Case in Racine, Wis. “I know tonight she’d rather be playing on the floor.”
Maryland was told to get Logic and her family to the state finals Saturday night so she could be honored as Miss Basketball. But he was supposed to do it without revealing why she had to be there.
Racine Case went 22-3 this season but lost in a Super Tuesday game. Maryland eventually had to spill the beans because Logic was due Saturday in Chicago to start practicing for the McDonald’s game.
“I’m going to get there (Sunday) morning,” Logic said by phone Saturday. “I was supposed to be there tonight.”
Logic also was named the Gatorade state player of the year and will play in the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association all-star game Saturday in Indianapolis.
Logic, who signed with Iowa last fall, averaged 14.6 points, 8.5 rebounds, and about 7 assists and 3 steals per game.
“If Sam wanted to score 30 points per game, she could,” Maryland said. “During the regular season, she wasn’t even thinking points. She kept a good balance and had the right attitude.”
The 5-foot-11 guard said she was looking forward to meeting the other McDonald’s All-Americans this week and also visiting the Ronald McDonald house.
“Those kids have a lot of courage,” Logic said. “I’m looking forward to meeting them.”
Racine Case has one busload going to the game. Maryland said Hawkeye fans who watch the game on ESPNU are in for a treat.
“Fans are going to see a very unselfish player who really enjoys playing with her teammates,” Maryland said. “They are going to see her banter with the officials. She is very comical and very fun to watch.
“And they are going to see one or two moves and say ‘wow, how did she do that?’”
Logic will take summer classes at Iowa and participate in the Game Time League. She also will go on an overseas trip with the Iowa women’s basketball team in August.
“It’s going to be fun,” Logic said. “I’m looking forward to it a lot. It’s a once in a lifetime experience.
“And I get to play basketball on top of it.”
Iowa returns four starters from this past season, but Logic — complete with her awards and credentials — is expected to find playing time as a freshman.
“I’m so excited she chose Iowa,” Maryland said. “They are going to love this girl and marvel at her ability to play.”
