It’s official: Adam Robinson is a former Iowa football player.

Robinson’s mother, Sally Robinson, said Tuesday that the running back from Des Moines will transfer.

“All I can say now is that he’s exploring his options,” she said. “We don’t know where he will be enrolling, but he will be someplace, hopefully in time for summer school.”

Robinson, Iowa’s top rusher last season, was suspended from the team by coach Kirk Ferentz before last December’s Insight Bowl, then on the eve of the game, he was charged with possession of marijuana.

After the bowl game, Ferentz said Robinson had been dismissed from the team, but when asked for an update last month at a Polk County I-Club function, Ferentz said:

“My No. 1 focus for him is to do well academically, and then we’ll see where it takes him.”

When asked then if there’s a chance for redemption, he said:

“We’ll see where he’s at at the end of the semester, and we’ll go from there.”

Apparently that door closed.

Unless granted a medical waiver by the NCAA, Robinson will have one season of eligibility remaining after sitting out a year if he transfers to a Division I college. He will be eligible immediately if he transfers to a lower-division school. Adam Robinson could not be reached for comment.

“Hopefully this gets done soon,” Sally Robinson said. “Summer school is approaching. We’re talking to schools, seeing which one would be a good fit.”

She would not disclose the schools that have contacted her son.

“He’s picked out several to look at,” she said. “He’ll end up someplace, and he’ll be successful.”
