Barta: Construction to affect football parking near Kinnick

[ 0 ] June 8, 2011 |

Construction of a new transportation facility and indoor practice facility will affect football parking near Kinnick Stadium next season.

University of Iowa Athletics Director Gary Barta said Wednesday during an Iowa state Board of Regents meeting in Iowa City that major donor and RV parking outside the football stadium will be affected by the construction projects and that he has been working to contact fans who may not get their usual tailgating sites.

“We’re working on mitigating that, and we’re speaking with contributors,” Barta said. “I’m not naïve enough to think 100 percent of them will agree with the plan.”

Barta said a new parking lot is being built on the north side of the outdoor practice field to accommodate RV parking.

The University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics plans to begin construction on a new transportation center in the parking lot directly north of Kinnick Stadium and east of the Recreation Building in the fall. The project was approved by Regents on Wednesday.

A new indoor athletic facility currently is set to begin construction this fall, and the existing practice facility will be torn down in 2012. That will allow for more parking, Barta said.

“At the end of the day, the net parking will increase about 300 spaces,” he said.

Also Wednesday, Regents approved construction plans for a new golf training facility at Finkbine Golf Course.

The new $1.8 million, 7,600-square-foot facility is in line with the department’s mission and strategic plan of recruiting strong student-athletes and providing them with the facilities and resources they need to excel, Barta said.

The training facility will be financed by Athletic Department gifts and earnings and would include men’s and women’s team locker rooms, team meting space and an area to practice chipping and hitting.

Barta said it also will include heated hitting bays with large doors that open onto the driving range so golfers can hit balls outdoors but still be protected from the environment.
