QB Russell Wilson transferring to Wisconsin
Finding a replacement for departed quarterback Scott Tolzien might have just gotten easier for the Wisconsin Badgers.
Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema said Monday afternoon that former North Carolina State quarterback Russell Wilson will transfer to Wisconsin to play his senior season this fall.
“Russell will come in and compete for the starting quarterback position,” Bielema said in a release. “This is an unusual situation, especially for a program that prides itself on developing players throughout their careers, as we do here at Wisconsin.
“However, this is a special situation and Russell is the type of player and person that fits well with our team.”
Wilson started in each of the past three seasons at North Carolina State, passing for 8,545 yards and 76 touchdowns. He also plays professional baseball and is an infielder with the Colorado Rockies Class A affiliate in Asheville, N.C.
Wilson will have one season of eligibility and is expected to be allowed to compete this fall after earning his undergraduate degree.
Wilson picked Wisconsin over defending national champion Auburn.
The Badgers have to replace Tolzien, who used up his eligibility last season. Tolzien threw for over 5,000 yards as a Badger and led the 2010 squad to a share of the Big Ten title.
Iowa and Wisconsin are now in different divisions and won’t face each other in the regular season, but they could meet in the first Big Ten championship game.
