Iowa football opponent on Sept. 17: Pittsburgh
Pittsburgh’s Todd Graham is one of four first-year coaches Iowa will face. Others in initial seasons at their schools are Indiana’s Kevin Wilson, Minnesota’s Jerry Kill, and Michigan’s Brady Hoke.
Sept. 17
11 a.m.
Kinnick Stadium
Last year: 8-5, 5-2 in Big East Conference
Coach: Todd Graham (first season at the school)
Key losses: TB Dion Lewis, P/PK Dan Hutchins, WR Jon Baldwin, OT Jason Pinkston, DE Jabaal Sheard, SS Dom DeCicco, CB Ricky Gary, FB Henry Hynoski.
Key additions: TE Hubie Graham, OL Zenel Demhasaj, LB Nicholas Grigsby, DL Khaynin Mosley-Smith, CB Lafayette Pitts.
Outlook: New coach Todd Graham’s offense isn’t as stuffed shirt as that of former coach Dave Wannstedt. While Wanny was a throwback, Graham is a look-ahead guy whose Tulsa teams no-huddled and quick-tempo’d with the best of them. Graham’s preseason message to his players mentioned leading the nation in possessions per game.
Player to watch: The new offense starts with veteran quarterback Tino Sunseri, who completed 223 of 346 passes for 2,572 yards and 16 touchdowns last season. He’s also adept on his feet, a trait especially important in Pitt’s new playbook.
