Peterson: Iowa Board of Regents chief smacks the Huskers

[ 5 ] August 6, 2011 |

Iowa City, Ia. – The president of the Iowa Board of Regents Friday lobbed the state of Iowa’s first official verbal jab – at least from a big-wig official — at Big Ten Conference newbie Nebraska.

The chief, Farm Bureau president Craig Lang, said during one of his rare appearances before the press:

“Iowa is No. 1 in all these things in agriculture, and Nebraska is not No. 1 in anything in agriculture, even though they’re an agriculture state.”

He offered that random statement, without prodding, during Friday’s announcement that Iowa is ramping up farmer awareness. They even brought former coach Hayden Fry along to be the spokesman, considering the first ANF happened on his watch.

Fry was so bewildered at Lang’s Husker comment that he reminded reporters that they weren’t words of the former coach.

In sports jargon, we call that Trash Talking, this one coming from the Board of Regents. Certainly others will chime in between now and the Nov. 25 game in Lincoln.

The Omaha World-Herald reports that former Iowa running back Brandon Wegher is headed to Iowa Western Community College in Council Bluffs. That’s where Hawkeye running recruit Rodney Coe has enrolled, too.

Still no word on Adam Robinson’s football future.

If the Wegher rumor is true, I hope that Rodney Coe steers clear of Wegher…Wegher is a a loser.

I’m not sure what you are referring to as sad. If it is choosing to go play at IWCC, that may be the best choice for him to get himself back to a division I school. If he is able to get his personal stuff in order and grow up, he will be able to go play somewhere next year at the D1 level. He still has time, he hasn’t completely squandered his life yet.

Statements like this by the Guv’s “boy” have to make you wonder about the future direction of the Regents. Nothing like giving Nebraska some bulletin board material they don’t need. What a maroon!

I live in Nebraska, and the Huskers are in the paper EVERY SINGLE DAY, reporting on everything from recruiting to what the players are eating. This state lives and breathes Big Red (which made it painful as a Cyclone to live over here) This is not a smart thing to say, especially when you have to play in Lincoln this November. That being said, I hope you guys come over here and kick some BigRed #ss!!
