Jade Rogers to miss 2011-12 season

[ 0 ] September 14, 2011 |

Jade Rogers will have surgery on her injured left knee on Thursday and miss the entire 2011-12 season for the Iowa women’s basketball team.

Rogers, a 6-foot sophomore forward from Cedar Rapids, is having a surgery that will realign her left leg and help her knee heal.

Rogers tore her ACL in high school at Cedar Rapids Kennedy and has had meniscus injuries while at Iowa.

“Even though I have to sit out this year, I’m happy to get this injury resolved,” Rogers said in a release. “It will help me come back healthier and stronger next year and will also improve my quality of life down the road.”

Rogers is expected to take a redshirt this season.

“We will miss having Jade in uniform this season,” Iowa coach Lisa Bluder said in the release. “With this surgery, she will have an opportunity to return to competitive basketball.

“Her quality of life after her basketball career will also be much better.”

Rogers played in 13 games as a freshman, often playing out of position at center. She totaled 21 points and 22 rebounds in 71 minutes of play.

The loss of Rogers is another hit to Iowa’s depth after Hannah Draxten retired retired in April following back surgery.

But the Hawkeyes should still boast their deepest bench in years this fall with the addition of five freshmen. Four starters return from an Iowa team that finished 22-9 and made the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season.

In addition, sophomore Theairra Taylor, who missed most of the past two seasons with ACL injuries, is on track to return when practice starts in October.

Iowa opens the season on Nov. 6 with an exhibition game against Winona State.
