Dave and Michele Greenwood hear you Hawkeye fans.

The parents of former Iowa football player Brett Greenwood released a statement on Wednesday for the first time since their son collapsed during a workout earlier this month.

“During this very difficult time for our family, we have been overwhelmed by the tremendous outpouring of support we have received from family, friends, the community and the Hawkeye Nation. It means a great deal to us to have so many people reaching out to us and telling us that they are praying for Brett,” the family said in a statement released through the University of Iowa Athletics Department.

Greenwood was given CPR and rushed to a hospital after collapsing during a workout at Pleasant Valley High School on Sept. 9.

Former Pleasant Valley football coach Ed Morrissey visited Greenwood last week and said that he remains in a medically induced coma at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Morrissey said at the time that Greenwood was responding to pinching and coughing on his own.

Greenwood’s parents said in the statement that their son continues to make strides in his recovery.

“Brett continues to fight and to make improvements. We would ask that you continue to keep Brett in your thoughts and prayers, now more than ever. We also appreciate everyone respecting our family’s privacy at this time,” the family said in the statement.

Fans throughout the state have shown their support for Greenwood in a variety of ways.

Members of the Pleasant Valley district wore green during Greenwood’s 24th birthday on Sept. 14.

During Pleasant Valley’s football game against Bettendorf last Friday, members of both teams and student councils met at midfield prior to the start of the game. Each released a balloon, a total of 30, the number Greenwood wore at Iowa.

More is on the way.

Iowa fans are staging a “greenout” during the Hawkeyes’ game against Louisiana-Monroe on Saturday, which begins at 11 a.m..

A Facebook page named “Wear Green for Greenwood,” was created encouraging fans to wear green during the game. The page is current selling green shirts for fans to wear. The site says that proceeds from the shirts will be donated to the Greenwood family or a heart related charity.
