I think Harty is right on with this article.

I see this defense getting shredded by a quality opponent.

The pass rush needs improvement. The run defense needs improvement. Harty is correct in saying that players are out of position on defense.

The one thing that does irritate me about Harty's articles is the fact that he seems to live in the past. Many times he compares current teams to teams from the past.

2002 was 9 years ago. Get over it.

Look at it this way:

Other than 2002, name ONE other season that the offense could be counted on to make up for average to mediocre defensive play. Can you?

Of course not! Iowa has been 7th offensively in the Big Ten since the Ferentz administration came aboard in 1999. Only ONE season could the offense be counted on to simply outscore people and the defense, while not terrible, was able to be simply average. The rest of the time Ferentz has always played JUST ENOUGH offense to get by and rely 80% on the defense to get the job done.

Now that we appear to have enough offensive tools to win (if we stay healthy and the line starts living up to its rep) without outstanding defense, I don't understand why Ferentz almost seems resigned (depressed?) to the fact that he has to be fully functional on offense this year and NOT live off Norm and the boys.

OK, your sarcasm is silly, everyone knows what Harty means here. Typically you see an Iowa team that shortens the game and wins by holding teams to under 20 pts. In a sense you are not trying to outscore the other team, you are trying to not let them score as much as you. It's really about the emphasis, and it does affect how you call a game offensively.

"It could be a situation where in order for Iowa to be successful this season, it might have to outscore opponents on a weekly basis, beginning with the Big Ten opener at Penn State on Oct. 8."

Gosh.

Really?

A team needs to outscore its opponent to win, in other words, to be successful?

Wowee.

In appreciation of such astonishing brilliance, Pat Harty ought to at least offer to share his incredible insights with the White House or perhaps the Pentagon.
