Wienke now No. 2; true freshman at No. 2 MLB
With backup quarterback A.J. Derby on the shelf for two weeks, junior John Wienke has taken over the No. 2 role at quarterback on the Iowa depth chart.
Derby was suspended Monday morning by Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz after being arrested Saturday night for public intoxication and fourth-degree criminal mischief.
Derby will sit out the next two games.
Wienke has one career attempt but has been on the field often as the holder on extra points and field goals. He is also the back-up punter.
Wienke and Derby shared the No. 2 spot behind Vandenberg in the preseason but Derby won the job outright after the season-opener against Tennessee Tech.
The new depth chart also lists true freshman Quinton Alston (6-1, 220) as the back-up middle linebacker behind sophomore James Morris.
Iowa has played 10 true freshman this season, but Alston is the first one to appear on the two-deep. Alston — from Sicklerville, N.J. — has one tackle in one game played this season.
