Illinois running back prospect David Smith no longer considering Iowa

[ 4 ] November 18, 2011 |

High school running back David Smith has gone from having the Iowa Hawkeyes at or near the top of his list of schools to now not even having Iowa under consideration.

Smith told HawkeyeInsider.com on Thursday that he no longer was considering Iowa.

“I’m not the top guy on their board anymore,” said Smith, who was scheduled to visit Iowa on Dec. 9. “I don’t know why. They pushed my official (visit) back to late January.”

Smith still plans to attend Iowa’s game at Purdue on Saturday, but as a visitor for Purdue. The Midlothian, Ill., native already has taken an official visit to Boston College last month and was considering visiting Oregon State and Cincinnati.

Smith has held an Iowa offer for a couple months and he has said publicly that Iowa was his top school.

The Iowa coaches are prohibited from talking about a specific recruit until the recruit has signed a national letter of intent. The signing period for football will start on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

Iowa received two verbal commitments this week, with both players coming from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Receiver Greg Mabin picked the Hawkeyes over a scholarship offer from Middle Tennessee State and defensive end Daumantas Venckus picked Iowa over offers from Navy and Colorado State.

Iowa now has at least 12 verbal commitments in the 2012 recruiting class.

Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said this week that the 2012 class likely would have around 18 to 20 prospects when completed.

Iowa is still recruiting high school running back Greg Garmon from Erie, Pa. He already has visited Iowa and he plans to announce his decision in early January at the Sempler Fi all-star game in Arizona.

Sioux City Heelan running back Michael Malloy already has committed to Iowa, but Malloy is listed as an athlete and could play receiver in college.
