Canton High School coach Tim Baechler kept looking for different ways to get senior Kevin Buford the ball.
Buford played receiver, returned kicks and punts, and even moved to running back.
“He’s one of the most explosive players I’ve ever coached with the ball in his hands,” Baechler said. “As many times as I could get him the ball … I got him the ball.”
Buford announced his commitment to the Hawkeyes on Sunday at the end of his visit to Iowa City. The former Toledo recruit is a 3-star cornerback according to Scout.com.
The knock on Buford is his size. He is 5-foot-9 and 165 pounds.
Baechler said the senior has room to grow. The school record-holder in the 400, Buford didn’t really start lifting weights until this season.
“He’s really going to take off once they get their hands on him,” Baechler said. “He’ll get up to 185, 190 pounds, and be even faster.”
Buford played cornerback for Canton, and that’s the position he’s expected to fill for the Hawkeyes.
“He’s not afraid to hit,” Baechler said. “When he gets down the field, he plays with attitude. He can bring it up in there pretty good.”
