Insight Bowl: Carrier question: Who will run it?

[ 0 ] December 25, 2011 |

The Hawkeyes’ Marcus Coker is suspended. The Sooners’ Dom Whaley suffered a season-ending injury in the seventh game.

Who’s left to carry the ball at the Insight Bowl?

That’s one of many questions to be answered when what’s remaining of the teams meet at 9 p.m. Friday in Tempe’s Sun Devil Stadium.

Here are some other things to ponder while waiting for the ball to drop on 2011:

Will Iowa have an answer for the “Belldozer?” That’s Oklahoma backup quarterback Blake Bell, a 6-foot-6, 245-pounder who plays when the Sooners need a powerful fist-full of yards. On 33 carries, the redshirt freshman has bulldozed his way for nine touchdowns and 11 first downs.

And can Oklahoma slow down the Hawkeyes’ offense once they get the no-huddle revved up with passes to Marvin McNutt and Keenan Davis? The hurry-up look enabled Iowa to beat Pittsburgh after rallying from a 21-point deficit with just more than 18 minutes to play.

But did Iowa remember to pack that seemingly lost section of the playbook?

Speaking of quick-tempo offense, what scheme will the Hawkeyes’ retiring defensive coordinator, Norm Parker, devise to counteract an offense that gets to the line of scrimmage after plays quicker than anyone in the country?

Who replaces Parker?

And with assistant coach Rick Kaczenski’s departure, who’s in charge of an Iowa defensive line that hasn’t exactly been The Great Wall in 2011?

An offensive MVP for Iowa? It won’t be a Coker repeat, that’s for sure.
