After reading several other articles on this & why he’s leaving, I’m not really all that upset. It doesn’t pay to get upset. Attrition happens everywhere & if he wants to be the QB, he needs to go elsewhere. Personally, I think he would’ve been a pretty good one at Iowa but I think he needs an attitude adjustment. INSANE!!!! Way to go Kirk- first you take this Tim Tebow clone out of the QB spot, as that might create a challenge for your puppet KOK. God forbid Iowa considers a modern offense.Now you let the guy walk. You should join him. HIT THE ROAD!

I must disagree with the “two best QB’s of the last decade” comment. Ricky Stanzi outshone them both for actual performance, and over a longer period of time in the case of Banks.

However, the point that we need a good leader at QB with mobility, strength and versatility is well taken, and obvious to everyone except… well, the coaches. Unfortunately, old Amos Alonzo Stagg over at the football offices is bound and determined to stifle any such dynamism, and I despair of ever getting out of 7-5 land. I am not surprised we lost Derby to that sort of thinking. Disappointing. I think I will be distancing myself from the program for a while, for my own mental health. Too much frustration is a dangerous thing.

This worries me. Derby is probably one of the best all-around athletes that we’ve recruited, ever. A home grown stud. He could have played any position on the field. That’s why he was recruited by Florida, Notre Dame, and other top football schools I can’t remember. He’s 6’4″ or 6’5″, mobile, strong, fast, just what you want in a quarterback. The two best quarterbacks we had in the last decade were mobile…Banks and Tate. We got Banks by accident and he finishes 2nd in the Heisman. I just don’t get our offensive philosophy. We have to get in with the rest of these schools that have 21st century offenses. But no, we flounder with predictability and terrible clock management. Other teams have quarterbacks that take charge…call time outs expediently, and spike the ball at the appropriate time. Our QBs can’t seem to wipe their nose without looking to the sidelines for permission. Then they’ll even screw that up. It’s maddening, and something needs to change.

WOW a black & gold legacy player and Iowa City star is leaving the program along with the other 30 players since 2008! There is an inherent problem which needs to be addressed! AJ is a four-star recruit who we let sit on the sideline, he watched as a third string QB at Florida (which offered him scholarship) played Alabama, then he watched as Stoops incorporated an underclassman in a special package to bull-dozer Iowa in the Insight Bowl…we are being left with a decimated roster year after year because of the inability of the coaching staff to relate, mentor and adapt in the slightest to the realities of coaching talent.

sounds to me like he just wanted to play QB and it’s not in the cards at Iowa. That’s not unusual, so I don’t read too much into this event.

What the hell is going on? I have come to grips with Ferentz’s boring, conservative, play not to lose, pathetic, gameday coaching but now good players are leaving the program too?
