ISU-committed running back visits UI

[ 6 ] January 22, 2012 |

Cedar Falls running back Barkley Hill is committed to Iowa State, but with the national signing day less than two weeks away, he now might be wavering on that decision.

Enough so that Hill took a recruiting visit to Iowa City this weekend to get a closer look at the Iowa football program.

“The family just thought he should look around before he settles and he’s in Iowa City this weekend,” Cedar Falls football coach Pat Mitchell said this afternoon. “I have not heard anything about it.

“It’s just a family deal,”

Hill made a verbal commitment to Iowa State last April near the end of his junior year of high school.

However, that didn’t stop Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz from offering the 6-foot, 205-pound Hill a scholarship two months later in early June.

“I’m sticking with Iowa State unless something goes wrong there or something changes my mind,” Hill told HawkeyeInsider.com on June 3, shortly after receiving the offer from Iowa.

Hill couldn’t be reached for comment this afternoon. Mitchell said he hadn’t spoken with Hill since before Hill left for Iowa City.

Hill rushed for 2,491 yards and 40 touchdowns as a senior last fall while leading Cedar Falls to an 11-2 record. He finished his high school career with 6,163 rushing yards and a Class 4A record 89 touchdowns.

Iowa needs to reload at running back after losing five players with eligibility remaining at that position since 2010.

Greg Garmon, a high school senior running back from Erie, Pa., already has made a verbal commitment to Iowa and is expected to sign his letter of intent at the start of the national signing period on Feb. 1.
