Hill switches commit from ISU to Iowa
Cedar Falls running back Barkley Hill apparently enjoyed his visit to Iowa City over the weekend enough to want to come back for an extended stay.
Hill has changed his mind about playing football at Iowa State and now will attend Iowa on a football scholarship, according to Cedar Falls coach Pat Mitchell.
“It was a family decision,” Mitchell said Monday afternoon. “He had a visit to Iowa this past weekend and was very impressed and changed his mind.”
Hill first committed to Iowa State in April and then re-affirmed his commitment to the Cyclones after Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz offered him a scholarship in June.
Hill couldn’t be reached for comment Monday.
Hill is the second high school senior running back to commit to Iowa’s 2012 recruiting class. The other is four-star prospect Greg Garmon from Erie, Pa. Garmon picked Iowa over Arkansas and Miami (Fla.).
Hill rushed for 2,491 yards and 40 touchdowns as a senior last fall while leading Cedar Falls to an 11-2 record. He finished his high school career with 6,163 rushing yards and Class 4A record 89 touchdowns.
Iowa needs to reload at running back after losing five players with eligibility remaining at that position since 2010.
Mitchell thinks the 6-foot, 205-pound Hill can be an effective running back at the Big Ten level.
“I think so,” Mitchell said. “I’ve never coached a Big Ten running back, but he’s the finest one we’ve had.”
Mitchell said Hill will sign his letter of intent on the morning of Feb. 1, which is the start of the national signing period. Hill is believed to be at least the 19th player to join the 2012 recruiting class, including the 17th high school senior.
That class also includes two junior-college players – quarterback Cody Sokol and offensive lineman Eric Simmons. They both already have signed a letter of intent and are enrolled at Iowa for the spring semester.

The article says we now only have 2 RB commitments, Greg Garmon, and now Barkley Hill. What happend to Michael Malloy? DId his offer get revoked or did he de-commit?
I’m not seeing Malloy on their list anymore, but if he was, he had been recruited as an “Athlete” instead of a running back.

The scholarship had be withdrawn because of a drinking (I think it was drinking) arrest last summer…but he will be there to walk and make the team that way…and once he’s a walk on, they can give him a scholarship. From what I know, he will be there.
He couldn’t keep the scholarship because of an arrest for perhaps drinking last summer…but he will come and walk on, from what I heard, and probably earn a scholarship that way.

I hope Hill, Garmon, and the other stable of running backs all enjoy productive yearS (plural!) running behind our usual NFL-caliber linemen.

How does a recruit go from, “we didn’t want him, anyway,..” to a prized “get”?
When the whiff of desperation is sensed.

He was always considered a “soft verbal” also means I am still looking…wether it is Iowa or some other program that would top ISU as his choice. He was offered a scholarship to Iowa in June and it was never implied that “we didn;t want him, anyway”. The kid rushed for 2400 yards and 40 TD’s, who wouldn’t want him.

This is no longer the dark years of 2007-2008 in Iowa City. Cyclones have taken over and not only beat the Hawkeyes in football but have outdone Iowa in arrests 12-2 in 2011.
Here is a list of actual charges filed for Iowa Hawkeye and Iowa State Cyclone players for the 2011 year.
* * * * * 2011 U of I & ISU POLICE BLOTTER * * * * *
11/16/2011 — Iowa State wide receiver charged with first-degree armed robbery… ……………………..(He played in the Oklahoma State win 2 days later 11-18) 10/3/2011 — Iowa reserve quarterback charged with public intoxication.
9/13/2011 — Iowa State running back charged with public intoxication.
9/13/2011 — Iowa State running back charged with assault of a female.
9/13/2011 — Iowa State wide receiver charged with public intoxication.
7/25/2011 — Iowa State defensive back charged with operating a vehicle under the influence.
- – - – - – - – - This same player was arrested again January 9, 2012 for assault.
7/23/2011 — Iowa offensive lineman charged with drunk driving.
6/23/2011 — Iowa State running back charged with harassment of a public official.
3/5/2011 — Iowa State defensive end was charged with assault on a peace officer
3/5/2011 — Iowa State tight end was charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated.
2/1/2011 — Iowa State linebacker was charged with a drunk driving offense.
The one that really gets me is the first degree armed robbery arrest and the guy plays in the Oklahoma State game 2 days later.
Thanks npjud for giving me the opportunity to post this.

I appreciate the leg work done here…and can recognize that ISU has had it’s share of arrests in the past 12 months and beyond. I, however think it isn’t a fair comparison to only go back 12 months simply because it benefits you and your argument. So with that said, Since you clearly know where to find this information, I request that you go back…a decade let’s say and pull all that information together. Include coaches..who cares. They are part of the team too.
I might be proven wrong, as I truly don’t know, but my hunch here is that the University of Iowa has the lion’s share of the arrests and misconduct. Remember that in my original post I also included those student athletes that left the team due to grades…so make sure you put those in there too.
If I am proven to be wrong, I will make sure to say so. If not, then I think you should.
As mentioned, I appreciate your leg work here and look forward to the results.

I did go back. Iowa had a lot of problems and have made changes to their team rules to correct those problems and educate the kids involved. My point here is that now it is Iowa State that is currently having the problems. They need to do something as they now find themselves in the same situation that Iowa was in from the Pierre Pierce nightmare through the really bad 2007-2008 years. I even went back into the 2001-2002 to find what Dan McCarney’s responce was to the Cyclone rapes. He would not comment.
Bringing these comments on to these posts does neither school any good and I only post these in reply to comments already made. My reply was to npjud’s comment: “Hopefully he can avoid the pitfalls of the University of Iowa football program and not be arrested for drug abuse, sexual assult, DUI, assulting police officers, assulting bus windows, assulting fellow students, failing out of school”

From The Cedar Rapids Gazette:
From April 2007 through late June 2009, 26 football players were arrested or issued citations. That includes five felonies – two for rape, two for stealing credit cards and one for dealing prescription drugs. Of the 26 arrests, 20 were alcohol or drug related.
After this stretch Ferentz changed some team policies. Ferentz declined to explain publicly what those changes were, but among them was hiring a life skills adviser to help players transition to college life. Department penalties now rank among the nation’s most stringent.

Okay, I think it was some writer from the Des Moines Register who ‘retitled’ this article, because if you look at the title of the actual article on Hawk Central, it uses completely different language. It simply says Hill “switches commit to Iowa” and there is no mention of ‘dump’. I realize that Hawk Central is a part of the company owned by the DMR, but I believe it is the writers at the Register who are the ones constantly trying to stir up trouble. I’ve noticed that they often will run articles on topics into the ground, for no informational purposes other than to stir up Hawk and Cyclone fans against each other. Hawk Central is usually fairly neutral and doesn’t seem to try to rile people up – it’s the Des Moines Register that likes to do that. They need to start being more professional. Their job is to report, not to try to incite.

The arrests have comletely turned around in the past 2 years. Iowa State is having the same kind of years that Iowa had back in 2007-2008. There has been a string of arrests in Ames for assaults, burglaries, robberies, etc.
The 2011 Hawkeye team had 2 alcohol related arrests while the 2011 Cyclones had 12 arrests including the 1st degree armed robbery arrest 2 days before the Oklahoma State game and this guy actually got to play in the game. All these arrests are public record. Just do a search.

Bottom line Iowa poached this recruit, would expect anything different from this program. They are desperate to maintain viability in a conference they don’t belong in. The funny thing is listening to squawkie fans that are trying to justify the behavior, which is why some like to bring up other schools arrest records. Iowa fans are pathetic.

Iowa and Ferentz has put a lot of kids in the pros over the past years. Iowa has won the Big Ten title twice. Ferentz’s teams have finished in the top 8 in the FINAL national polls 4 times in the last 10 years. He has taken the team to bowl games 10 of the last 11 years going 6-4. The majority of Iowa’s opponents in the bowls have been top 25 BCS ranked teams. The 4 losses were to Southern Cal, Florida, Texas and this year’s loss to #14 Oklahoma. All of their bowl losses were to highly ranked BCS teams. Their worst season record in the past 11 years is 6-6 and never finished at the bottom of the Big 10 in this period. Iowa’s 6 2011 losses were by a combined total of 59 points and their worst loss in 3 years was the 17 points in the Oklahoma defeat.
Iowa is not and never will be a national football power. To be honest, if the Hawkeyes are competitive in the conference and finish in the middle to upper tier and then play in a good bowl game, it is probably the best that we can hope for. Iowa is not a hotbed of football but in recent years it has been nice to see them competitive with winning records.

You have talked to fans from other schools? How many, three? You are a typical fool who opens his yap without any facts to back what he’s saying. Iowa fans (and most Big Ten fans) are considered among the most cordial hosts of any school.
If you would care to do actual research, go to the Sports Illustrated issue with the article about the Top 25 Rudest Football fans, and you won’t find Iowa (or Michigan, or Indiana, or Illinois, or Wisconsin) on the list, but Nebraska is in there. You represent that rude behavior quite accurately.
Do you see Iowa fans posting on Nebraska message boards? No. First, we dont’ care, and secondly, I doubt that the rag in Lincoln allows messasge boards. They know they will have to deal with Goobers like you.
