Barta: Big Ten playoff interesting, but protect Rose Bowl

[ 3 ] February 7, 2012 |

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta says discussion of a college football playoff needs to include preserving bowls, including the Rose Bowl.

Barta supports also said he supports raising the regular-season victory bar for bowl participation.

His comments, in an email this morning to the Des Moines Register, came in the wake of a Chicago Tribune story that said the Big Ten Conference may re-think its anti-playoff stance.

“There has been a lot of discussion about the BCS and football post-season play the past several months,” Barta wrote. “College football’s popularity is at an all-time high.

“Right now, every regular season game means something, and I don’t want to lose that. Any talk of a limited playoff needs to keep the tradition of the Rose Bowl and the bowl system in play.”

Northwestern athletic director Jim Phillips, chairman of the conference’s administrators council, told the Tribune the conference acknowledges that a playoff would be popular among fans.

“We have to listen to the fans; we cannot be tone-deaf,” Phillips told the Tribune. “The Big Ten is open and curious.”

Barta is among the administrators who favor future bowl discussions — include raising the six-win eligibility requirement to seven.

“With a 12-game regular season, it makes sense to have a winning record in order to earn a postseason invitation,” he wrote.

Iowa stated playing 12 regular-season games annually in 2006. The Hawkeyes had a 6-6 record that season, but played in the Alamo Bowl.

Iowa State athletic director Jamie Pollard says he’s fine with the current six-win requirement.

“As a team that has participated in two bowl games in the past three years as a 6-6 team, both bowls have been a wonderful experience for our student-athletes and fans,” Pollard said
