Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery said Thursday that he still might use the one remaining scholarship available to him for the 2012-13 season.

“It’s still in play,” McCaffery said. “There aren’t a ton of guys we’re looking at, but we are still looking at some. ”

McCaffery said they’re evaluating players from both the high school and junior college levels, along with some transfers. A wing player is the first preference.

“You never say never on anything,” McCaffery said. “But the guys we’re looking at are at that (wing) position.”

McCaffery is in Portsmouth, Va., watching Iowa senior Matt Gatens compete in the Portsmouth Invitational pre-draft camp. McCaffery will leave after watching Gatens, his leading scorer,  play a second game on Friday. McCaffery will take part in several interviews with Gatens and potential agents.

“I’m going to talk to some other NBA people, too,” McCaffery said.
