Fran McCaffery to throw out first pitch at Wrigley on Aug. 31

[ 2 ] April 20, 2012 |

Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has already decided what he’ll deliver when he throws out the ceremonial first pitch before the August 31 baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants at Wrigley Field.

“Straight heat,” McCaffery said today when asked his pitch of choice.

McCaffery’s appearance on the mound will coincide with “Hawkeye Day with the Cubs.” Iowa opens the football season against Northern Illinois Sept. 1 at Soldier Field in Chicago.

McCaffery grew up in Philadelphia, Pa., and is a lifelong Phillies fan. His father started taking him to see the Phillies in the 1960s, when they played in Connie Mack Stadium.

The Cubs-Giants game starts at 1:20 p.m. on August 31. Kickoff hasn’t been set for the Hawkeyes’ football game with Northern Illinois the following day.
