The Iowa state Board of Regents voted 8-0 today to approve the budget, schematic design and project description for the facility. Regent President Pro Tem Bruce Rastetter, of Ames, abstained from the vote.

The 75,000-square-foot operations facility will be to the south of the new Indoor Athletics Practice and Recreation Facility, which is currently under construction.

The new building will include spaces for strength and conditioning, squad meetings, locker rooms, coaches offices and a public space for fans, Athletic Director Gary Barta said.

The project will be paid for through funds generated by the UI Athletic Department.

Barta said the new building is the last major piece of a larger plan to update several athletic facilities, including Kinnick Stadium and the indoor practice facility.

The regents also approved an updated budget for the university’s new golf training facility. Regent Bob Downer, of Iowa City, abstained. UI asked to increase the budget by about $208,000, for an overall cost of about $2.06 million.

Barta said the added cost comes from deciding to pour a concrete drive to the building instead of asphalt. He said that bids for doing the project were favorable and officials decided to spend more money upfront on a concrete drive to cut down on future maintenance costs.

Construction on the golf training facility began earlier this year, and should be completed next winter.
