Bobby Telford charged with public intoxication
Iowa heavyweight wrestler Bobby Telford was charged with public intoxication last weekend.
Telford, 20, was charged at 11:56 p.m. on April 20 in front of the Sports Column in downtown Iowa City.
According to the police report, Telford was found leaning up against the front of the bar. The police had responded to a problem and officers were told there had been a fight.
Telford “smelled strongly of ingested alcohol, had slurred speed, red bloodshot watery eyes, poor balance, and admitted to drinking.” He had a 21-plus band on his wrist despite being underage.
Telford refused a breath test both before and after his arrest. He originally said he didn’t have an ID, but it was later located in his front left pants pocket.
The redshirt freshman finished 29-9 this past season, earning All-American honors by placing fifth at the NCAA Tournament.
Iowa coach Tom Brands had no comment, per Iowa sports information.
