Hawks get commitment from linebacker

[ 2 ] April 27, 2012 |

Carmel High School coach Kevin Wright had three defensive players sign national letters of intent in February.

Carmel had rolled to a 14-1 record and won the 5A title by a 54-0 score.

“John Kenny was the most productive kid on our football team,” Wright said. “He didn’t get the publicity because we had some big-name guys.

“When you watch the tapes, the kid is everywhere.”

Iowa got a verbal commitment Friday from Kenny, a 6-foot-2, 215-pound linebacker. He is believed to be the seventh member of the 2013 recruiting class.

Kenny had visited Florida, was at Arizona last week and had offers from Boise State, Illinois and Indiana.

Kenny is a three-sport athlete — also playing hockey and lacrosse — but football is his best sport. He had 98 tackles and six sacks as a junior.

“Not only did he make tackles, force fumbles, the guy could rush the passer or defend in space,” Wright said. “He has the ability to play on a tight end, play inside as needed. He’s more of a hybrid.”

Wright said Kenny had plenty of room to get bigger. He played last season injured and had shoulder surgery after the season. He is only now getting back into the weight room.

“He never complained all year long,” Wright said. “He played through pain and never missed a down.

“By the time next season rolls around, he’ll be able to run and move. He’ll also be about 220 pounds.”

Iowa has seven verbal commitments for the 2013 class. Kenny is the fifth defensive player.
