New Cy-Hawk Trophy voting ends at midnight
The new Cy-Hawk Trophy is hours away from becoming official.
Late Monday afternoon the “Mascot Football Concept” was leading with over 8,000 votes. The second-place “Corn Football Concept” had just about 1,500.
Voting, which opened on April 14, is schedule to end at 11:59 p.m. Monday. The winning design will be announced on Tuesday.
Last summer fans from both schools were nearly unanimous in their dislike for the redesigned Cy-Hawk trophy, which featured a farm family gathered around a bushel of corn.
The feedback towards Iowa Corn, which sponsors the Cy-Hawk Series and the trophy, was immediate and negative. Iowa Corn responded by scrapping the farm family trophy and opening the design process to fans.
A panel made up of representatives from Iowa Corn and both schools looked at the top six designs submitted by fans and narrowed it down to three.
As of 5 p.m. Monday, the “Mascot” trophy had 8,034 votes, the “Corn Football” trophy had 1,444 votes, and the “Corn Stalk” trophy had 844 votes.
Fans were allowed to vote just once per e-mail address. The vote split among fan bases with 6,141 for Iowa and 3,782 for Iowa State.
The new trophy, built by Rickabaugh Graphics, will be used in the Cy-Hawk game on Sept. 8 in Kinnick Stadium.
