B.J. Armstrong will serve as Matt Gatens’ agent

Iowa senior guard Matt Gatens has signed with an agent who knows a little something about Hawkeye basketball.

Gatens, a guard and a second-team all-Big Ten selection as a senior, will be represented by former Iowa and Chicago Bulls point guard B.J. Armstrong and the Wasserman Media Group of Los Angeles, Calif.

“It’s cool to have that connection,” Gatens said. “B.J. has played a huge part in Iowa history.”

Armstrong and his partner, Jason Ranne, met with Gatens on Wednesday in Iowa City.

Gatens, who interviewed four different agencies, signed an agreement Thursday.

“It was a process,” Gatens said. “I’m excited about the way things worked out. I’m part of a good group. It’s a good fit.”

Armstrong became Iowa’s starting point guard as a sophomore in 1986-87, and held that position for his final three seasons as a Hawkeye. Drafted by the Bulls with the 18th pick of the first round of the 1989 NBA Draft, Armstrong started alongside Michael Jordan on Chicago’s NBA championship teams in 1991, 1992 and 1993.

Chicago Bulls star Derrick Rose is one of Armstrong’s clients, as well.

Gatens averaged 15.2 points as a Hawkeye senior, and moved from 30th to sixth on Iowa’s career scoring list with 1,635 points. One player Gatens didn’t catch was Armstrong, who is No. 4 on the career scoring list with 1,705 points.

At Iowa, Gatens —an Iowa City native —started all 128 games of his Hawkeye career.

Gatens played in the seniors-only Portsmouth Invitational last month, but is a longshot to get invited to the NBA Draft Combine in Chicago next month. The NBA Draft is June 28.

“We talked about getting a chance,” Gatens said. “I may be drafted late in the second round. If not, it may be a blessing. As a free agent, you can pick where you want to go and where the best fit may be.”

Gatens will graduate from Iowa on May 12. He’ll then travel to Los Angeles, Calif., for training to prepare himself for some potential tryouts with NBA teams.
