Knowing Iowa players a plus for Jarrod Uthoff

[ 0 ] May 9, 2012 |

Jarrod Uthoff isn’t ready to identify a favorite school among his list of transfer possibilities, but he said Wednesday afternoon that knowing some of the Iowa players is a plus for the Hawkeyes.

“It definitely helps,” Uthoff said. “Knowing that I’ll get along and knowing a couple players always helps.”

The 6-foot-8 Uthoff is looking to transfer after a redshirt season at the University of Wisconsin. He is free to transfer to any school outside the Big Ten without facing restrictions other than having to sit out a season.

Uthoff already visited Creighton and Iowa State. He also wants to visit Marquette and possibly Florida after he completes his semester exams next week. All of those schools except Creighton used to be on a restricted list, along with 23 others, until Wisconsin officials trimmed the list to only Big Ten schools in response to Uthoff’s appeal.

“I’m probably going to visit (Florida) after the school year just like Marquette,” Uthoff said. “I’m focused on finals now.

“And then kids would be back for summer school and that way I could get to know the guys.”

Any contact with the Iowa coaches, on the other hand, is prohibited because of the restrictions.

But Uthoff already knows some of the Iowa players, particularly sophomore-to-be shooting guard Josh Oglesby. They played on the same AAU team and they played against each other in high school, with Uthoff attending Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Oglesby at Cedar Rapids Washington.

He assumes the Iowa coaches still would want him based on how they recruited him in high school. Uthoff also has heard nothing from a third party to dispute that belief.

“I’m basically going off of prior (interest) because they wanted me in the first place,” Uthoff said of the Iowa coaches.

Asked he was serious about attending Iowa, Uthoff said, “I wouldn’t be considering it if I wasn’t serious.”

Iowa is the only Big Ten school that Uthoff is considering. He would have to pay his own way to Iowa for one year because of the restrictions before being put on scholarship for his final three seasons under the new Big Ten transfer rule.

Uthoff could enroll at Iowa for summer school, but he still couldn’t talk to the Iowa coaches until he enrolls as a full-time student for the fall semester.
