Hawkeyes in 11th place after first round of regional golf
Iowa and Iowa State have some catching up to do after the first round of NCAA men’s golf regionals Thursday.
The Hawkeyes are in 11th place, shooting a 4-over-par 288 at the Athens, Ga., regional. Barrett Kelpin and Ian Vandersee led Iowa with even-par 71s. Joseph Winslow and Chris Brant added 73s and Steven Ihm a non–counting 74.
Iowa State is in 11th place at the Bowling Green regional after shooting a 17-over-par 305. Nate McCoy led the Cyclones with an opening one-over 73. Scott Fernandez shot 76, Sam Daley and Borja Virto 78s and Duncan Croudis a non-counting 79.
The 54-hole competition ends Saturday. Teams must finish in the top five of their regional to advance to the NCAA finals May 29-June 3 at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif.
