Iowa football: Which true freshman running back will emerge?

Greg Garmon or Barkley Hill. . .

Which true Iowa football freshman running back will rush for the most yards?

“We’ll encourage both of those players to get ready and do the best they can this summer,” coach Kirk Ferentz said during a press conference before the final spring scrimmage. “We’ll evaluate them in August … and I can envision both of them playing next year.”

They’re in the mix, as you know, because Marcus Coker transferred to Stony Brook, Mika’il McCall to Southern Illinois, and Jordan Canzeri to the ACL injury rehab room.

“When Jordan (Canzeri) got injured, that increased the odds for everyone,” Ferentz said.

The starter on Sept. 1 against Northern Illinois at Soldier Field is likely to be soph Damon Bullock (career rushing stats: 10 carries, 20 yards). There’s also sophomore De’Andre Johnson (career rushing stars: 18 carries, 79 yards) on the team, and aside from fullback Brad Rogers – that’s it.

“There’s going to be opportunities for guys,” running backs coach Lester Erb said.

Like Hill. Like Garmon.

Hill is a 6-foot, 200-pounder from Cedar Falls who rushed for 2,491 yards and 40 touchdowns last season.

“Everybody has a shot to play, that’s what they’re saying,” Hill said during the winter.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound Garmon, from Erie, Pa., had 2,859 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns during his high school career.

“I feel I’ve got a good shot to play right away,” Garmon said. “That’s my hope.”

So the question:
