Former Hawkeye Sash building his brand
Former Iowa safety Tyler Sash isn’t an entrepreneur and marketing genius, yet.
But he’s working on it.
“I like to be in charge,” Sash said. “I got a certificate in entrepreneurship at Iowa when I was there. I like having fun with that stuff.”
The Super Bowl champion will be in Iowa City on Saturday to promote his partnership with Deuce Brand watches.
Sash is signing autographs and taking pictures with fans from noon to 2 p.m. at Herky’s Locker Room in Coralville.
Fans have the chance to buy a Hawkeye Deuce sports watch, a brand Sash got involved with last summer.
“You can wear it anywhere,” Sash said. “Being an athlete, I like to work out with it because I don’t like having a big, bulky watch on.”
Deuce is even crafting a special Tyler Sash model it will introduce later this year. On its website, Duece has 10 NFL player models already.
“I’m pretty excited about it,” Sash said. “I’m excited to make it available to New York Giants fans and Iowa fans.”
Last year, Sash started his own line of products, GBNB Gear (Get Better Not Bitter). Right now, the company takes orders through its Facebook page, but Sash said he is having a website built for it.
He also has the Tyler Sash Foundation set up to give back to his home state.
“Whatever team I’m on, I want to help out in the community as much as possible,” Sash said.
Of course, building his name recognition will help sell his products and grow his foundation. He is working on that, too.
Sash played mainly on special teams for the Giants as a rookie recording17 tackles and one forced fumble, but will competing for the third safety spot this summer.
“We played three safeties 70 to 80 percent of the time last year,” Sash said. “So I’m excited about that.”
The Oskaloosa native left Iowa early and was picked by the Giants in the sixth round of the 2011 NFL Draft.
