Matt Gatens will play in summer league for Phoenix Suns
Iowa’s Matt Gatens has accepted an offer to play for the Phoenix Suns in NBA summer-league competition starting next month, and hopes to use that as a springboard to earning an invitation to training camp.
“We have a mini-camp in Phoenix around July 9, then the summer league in Las Vegas starting the 14th (of July),” the 6-foot-5 guard and the Hawkeyes’ No. 6 career scor
ing leader said today. “I haven’t seen the full itinerary yet.”
Gatens averaged 15.2 points and shot 41 percent from 3-point range as a senior. He had NBA workouts with the Suns, the Los Angeles Clippers, Chicago, Milwaukee, Portland, Golden State and Washington.
Gatens shot the ball extremely well in his first workout with the Suns, earning a second visit 10 days later.
