Kirk Ferentz on the side:

No suspension for running back Greg Garmon

CB Jordan Lomax out for season with shoulder injury

LB Dakota Getz won’t be ready for the start of fall practice due to injury

Ferentz is open to consider occasionally wearing the pro-combat uniform.

**

Some alleged reporter just asked Ferentz his thoughts on opening the season at “Soldiers” field. Get that person outta here.

**

Ferentz: We have a team that has the potential to grow into a good football  team.

**

We’re waiting for the dean of Big Ten Conference coaches–Kirk Ferentz.

And guess who’s sitting here just waiting to ask the first question:

Gary Dolphin.

**

Clearly Penn State is the hot topic at the Big Ten media days.

**

Iowa athletic director Gary Barta said Greg Garmon isn’t necessarily suspended for any games. He doesn’t have to be suspended. Kirk’s decision.

**

O’Brien on changing Penn State uniforms: Changes that have taken place at Penn State over the last 6 months that are reflected already. Some of the changes people will have to wait and see on Sept., 1.

**

O’Brien just said he feels good about the running back position “with Silas coming back:

**

O’Brien: I had a meeting Monday morning with my players. Talked about education they’re receiving at Penn State. I talked to them about adversity. Measure of a man is how you overcome adversity.

As far as other schools on campus. I  have no idea what schools are on campus, nor do I care.  That’s about all I have to say on that.

Silas Redd update: No.

The rules are what they are. It’s like NFL free agency without the rules. I don’t have anything else to say on that.

Spoken to Beckman about it: No

11:39: Penn State coach Bill O’Brien made the ESPN rounds Wednesday. Now he’s in Chicago.

We have a bunch of kids back at State College that are sticking together. They have turned the page and are ready to move forward.

Our fans need to get on board.

The Big Ten doesn’t get it. They need more than one AAAA battery powering the gizmo that runs the Internet. Never heard so much grumbling.

11:30 am: Cameras waiting for new Penn State coach Bill O’Brien outside the interview room. They’re going to be out of luck. He’s already in the room. Came through a side door.

11:15 am: New Illinois coach Tim Beckman admitted having coaches in State College on Wednesday, but said they were not on campus. Also said PS officials had a list of which coaches were on campus.

“We went to  establishments outside campus,” Beckman said. “We called some individuals. If they wanted to come by, it was their opportunity to come by.”

10:45 am: Penn State players are in Chicago, a change from Wednesday’s announcement. No Silas Redd, though. Word is that he’s talking to USC.

Since Twitter’s a flutter, here are some updates from Big Ten Media Days in Chicago:

Ohio State coach Urban Meyer with some honesty: Big Ten isn’t the best conference in the country.

Also Meyer: Earned respect for reporters during his year as a broadcaster.
