Pocono tragedy has an Iowa basketball connection

Incoming Iowa freshman Kyle Meyer

Sunday’s tragedy at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond,

Pa., has an Iowa connection.

Lightning strikes following a rain-shortened NASCAR race killed Brian Zimmerman of Moosic, Pa., and injured nine others.

Kyle Meyer is an incoming freshman on Iowa’s basketball team. Zimmerman was his step mother’s brother.

This is what Meyer posted on Twitter Monday morning:  “I feel extremely blessed today. My step mom’s brother died at Pocono by a lightning strike. Keep my family in your prayers.”
