South Dakota isn’t considered a hot spot for college football recruiting, but the Iowa coaches still have managed to find help from there.
Former Iowa stars Chad Greenway and Riley Reiff are both from South Dakota and so is Iowa’s latest commitment, with high school senior-to-be receiver Matt VandeBerg committing to the Hawkeyes on Sunday. VandeBerg, who also plays defensive back, announced his decision to attend Iowa on Twitter.
He has accepted a gray-shirt offer, which means he would be put on scholarship after one semester. The 6-foot-1, 175-pound VandeBerg had over 1,000 receiving yards as a junior last season.
He attends Brandon Valley High School in Brandon, S.D.
As for Greenway and Reiff, they’re from the South Dakota towns of Mount Vernon and Parkston, respectively. Greenway was an all-America linebacker at Iowa and now is a starter for the Minnesota Vikings entering his seventh season.
Reiff was an all-Big Ten offensive lineman and now is a rookie with Detroit Lions after being selected in the first round of the NFL draft this past April.
