Iowa City, Ia. – Aaron White got a chuckle out of Deyvn Marble’s H-O-R-S-E shot, and what followed, Thursday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Marble made a three-pointer that got a friendly bounce off the top of the backboard.
“And he came back with a heat check, thinking he was hot,” White said.
On the next trip down the floor, Marble took a quick 3-pointer from the top of the key that missed.
“He played well tonight, and shot the ball pretty well,” White said after a 66-36 victory against Howard. “Their defense really had to lock in on him and opened it up for other players.”
Marble finished with 22 points and White 16 and eight rebounds. Marble’s spectacular shot got an assist fro
m the top of the square. White had a spectacular play of his own, also in the second half. Mike Gesell found White in transition and he dunked in traffic.
“I knew if I just put it by the rim, he’d get it,” Gesell said.
White has put down a lot of dunks in his short Iowa career. This was the best one. I asked White if he agreed.
“Don’t know,” White said as he was leaving Carver-Hawkeye Arena. “I haven’t seen a replay yet.”
Iowa will have to come to play Saturday against Gardner-Webb, a 71-59 winner at DePaul Thursday. Gardner-Webb lost its opener at North Carolina, 76-59.
“I did see the Carolina score,” White said. “It will probably be the best competition of these first four games that we’ve had.”
Defense has been an emphasis this season, and that will be the case again Saturday.
“We’re making defense more of a priority than we did last year,” White said. “This year it’s all about the defensive end and getting stops. That’s how you win games. Last year we won games by outscoring guys. We ended up in the NIT, and that’s not where we want to be. So this year it’s defense first, and hopefully making the NCAA Tournament.”
