IOWA CITY, Ia. – Leave it to a freshman to reduce the Iowa-Iowa State rivalry into its simplest form.
“You could ask any former Iowa player what their record is against Iowa State, and they’d know,” Iowa freshman center Adam Woodbury said. “They might not know what it is against Purdue, or someone else.”
Woodbury, a lifelong Hawkeye fan from Sioux City, gets his first taste of the series Friday at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Adam Haluska, who played for both Iowa State and Iowa during his career, said he pulls for both teams. His younger brother, Sean, played for the Cyclones. Another younger brother, Blake, is on the Iowa football team.
“People say, “You’ve got to choose one school or the other,” Haluska said. “I’m going to tell you, I’m a big Fred Hoiberg fan. And I’m a big Fran McCaffery fan. I love watching both schools. I want to see Iowa State do well, and I want to see Iowa do

well.”
To the enthusiastic fan bases of both schools, there is no middle ground. Iowa State has had bragging rights for the last three seasons: an 81-71 victory in 2009 in Ames; a 75-72 victory in Iowa City in 2010; and an 86-76 victory last season in Ames. The Cyclones will be trying to win a fourth straight game for the first time. This will be the 66th meeting between schools. Iowa has a 42-23 edge, including a 26-6 mark in Iowa City. But the Cyclones have a 16-14 edge over the last three decades.
And it could be a guy from Michigan, not Iowa, who decides the outcome. Will Clyburn, Iowa State’s leading scorer, is from Detroit. Devyn Marble, Iowa’s leading scorer, is from Southfield.
The Cyclones also have former Michigan State guard Korie Lucious; and Percy Gibson, Sherron Dorsey-Walker and Cameron Fowler, all from Detroit. Iowa also has Anthony Clemmons from Lansing.
“I’m pretty familiar with a lot of the guys there,” Clemmons said. “When all said and done, we’re still friends at the end of the day. But once you step on the court, there’s no friends around.”
