Iowa football: Big-play receiver headed to Iowa City
Iowa may have a receiver with big-play capability after all.
Various web sites report Sunday that Damond Powell, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound sophomore from Snow College in Ephraim, Utah has accepted the Hawkeyes’ scholarship offer. He has two seasons of eligibility remaining.
Powell, of Toledo, Ohio, led the national JC ranks with 30.0 yards per reception last season, indicating he has ability to separate from defensive backs.
Powell caught 41 passes for 1,231 yards and 14 touchdowns. That’s twice as many touchdowns as Iowa had in the passing game all season.
Powell had long catch-and-runs of 51, 61 and 78 yards, and that’s impressive, too.
Iowa had just one passing play longer than 51 yards during a 4-8 season.
Jordan Cotton led Iowa in yards per catch at 14.3. That’s 15.7 yards behind what Powell accomplished.
He will graduate from Snow in the spring.
“Schools generally prefer bringing in junior college guys after the first semester, but the fact that Iowa offered him before he graduated shows what they think of him,” said Todd Worly, recruiting analyst for 247sports.com.
“He hasn’t graduated yet. That’s a big indication of how important – and explosive – he is.”
