Freshman RB Greg Garmon to transfer

[ 0 ] December 12, 2012 |

Running back Greg Garmon confirmed via text that he has asked for and been granted his release from the University of Iowa.

Iowa Sports Information Director Steve Roe said he had not talked to any coaches about it and had no comment at this time.

A four-star recruit out of McDowell High School in Erie, Pa., Garmon ran for 122 yards as a true freshman this past season.

He finished third on the team after sophomores Mark Weisman (159-815) and Damon Bullock (135-513) in rushing yards this past season.

He also had eight catches for 57 yards and five kickoff returns for 118 yards (23.6 per return average).

Garmon will be the seventh Iowa running back to transfer over the past three seasons. Since the 2009 season, Jeff Brinson, Josh Brown, Brandon Wegher, Jewel Hampton, Mika’il McCall and Marcus Coker have transferred from Iowa to another school.

It is not clear where Garmon might turn up next. During his recruitment, he visited Arkansas, Miami (Fla.), and Ohio State, but had offers from another handful of schools.

Under NCAA transfer rules, unless he heads to an FCS school or lower-division school, Garmon will have to sit out a season before taking the field. He still has a redshirt season available.
