Iowa football: Garmon’s transfer could be a good thing
This isn’t the end of the world that another Iowa running back transferred.
Losing Greg Garmon, a true freshman who even coach Kirk Ferentz said ran toward the sidelines a few too many times, doesn’t mean the Hawkeyes are destined for another 4-8 season in 2013.
Perception aside, it could be a good thing.
That position already is crowded behind Mark Weisman (an Air Force-to-Iowa transfer, by the way) and Damon Bullock, who do not have to prove themselves when spring ball starts.
Garmon’s departure means Jordan Canzeri, Barkley Hill and Michael Malloy will get more practice attention – providing nothing negative happens to them between now and April.
That’s the story – hidden behind the fact that Garmon is the fourth running back to leave Iowa since the calendar turned.
Marcus Coker transferred to Stony Brook, where he rushed for 1,018 yards and nine touchdowns on 210 carries last season. He was the No. 2 running back.
Mika’il McCall transferred to Southern Illinois, where he rushed 130 rushes times for 489 yards and 8 touchdowns as the Salukis’ No. 2 rusher. He also caught 17 passes for 173 yards and a touchdown.
De’Andre Johnson was told to leave after multiple run-ins with the law. He wasn’t expected to play much, if any, last season, anyway.
