Red-hot Devyn Marble takes over go-to role

Devyn Marble has scored 57 points in his last 59 minutes of action

Iowa City, Ia. – Devyn Marble’s shooting stroke is stuck on automatic.

“Just me working on my game,” said Iowa’s junior guard, who has scored 57 points in his last 59 minutes on the floor. “When you get in the gym and put the extra time in, you play with that kind of fire. That’s how Kobe (Bryant) is. That’s how (Michael) Jordan is. All the greats, all the NBA players. You put that work in and you feel like you have an edge. That’s how I feel right now. Hopefully we just keep riding it out.”

Marble had made 10 3-pointers in 30 attempts over Iowa’s first 10 games this season. He’s 10-for-17 in the last two while scoring 30 points against Northern Iowa Saturday and 27 more against South Carolina State Wednesday. He’s made 14 of 27 shots from the field in those two games, and 19-of-25 free throws.

“I’m definitely a confident guy,” Marble said. “That drives me. If you’re not confident you’re not going to accomplish anything, on the court or in life.”

Marble played just 22 minutes Wednesday. When he left the game for good, 4 minutes into the second half, Marble had outscored South Carolina State, 27-22.

Matt Gatens was Iowa’s go-to guy last season. Marble was expected to inherit that role. The torch has been passed.
